The Fantail is an English goldfish variety which is perfectly happy in the UK garden pond. It is a popular but demanding fish for the breeder and the show bench. Reasonable numbers of metallic and nacreous fish are available but the competition means the standard needed to do well on the show bench is very high. The Fantail must have a reasonably deep, rounded body, a strong, straight dorsal fin and a short to moderate tail length. The tail must be carried high and spread like a fan when viewed from above and the rear (hence the name). The Fantail also needs strong colour to be successful with deep orange/red or strong nacreous blue essential for success. A hardy and relatively cheap fish which is ideal for the newcomer to breed as the selection criteria for fry is easily understood and implemented.
