The pom-pon is the rarest of the dorsal-less varieties in the UK. Most imports are of Pom-pons with a dorsal fin and / or with the Pom-pon being a secondary characteristic of a hybrid variety, but none of these are recognised in the GSGB standards. The Pom-pons themselves are enlarged nasal-sceptre on the top of the fish’s head. The variety also requires a smooth back and a short twin tail and can come in metallic or nacreous scale types. It seems the lack of a particularly striking characteristic is behind the lack of popularity and the consequential rarity. Having said that it is a reasonably hardy variety that a relative newcomer to breeding could do well with.
