The Ryukin is characterised by the strength of the fish, the tall hump behind the head, the depth of the body and the intense colour. Most are metallic fish though nacreous fish are available if you are prepared to search. Many are imported but very few reach the highest standards and are a commanding fish in pond or aquarium. Although they may look relatively unsophisticated, the infrequency of the very best fish in a spawning makes the Ryukin a challenging fish to breed. One of the largest varieties needing a lot of food, swimming space and good water quality they are an increasingly popular variety with a show standard introduced in 2014 for the first time.
